Discovering Glurns

Small, fortified, authentic: Glorenza (Glurns) is the smallest city in South Tyrol and one of the best‑preserved medieval villages in the Alpine arc. Surrounded by 16th‑century walls with three perfectly intact gate‑towers, it boasts a compact historic center of arcades, cobbled squares, and merchant houses, where time seems to slow down. We are in the Upper Val Venosta, at 907 m above sea level, just a few kilometers from the Swiss border, with the Adige River flowing just outside the walls near its source. Its location along the ancient Via Claudia Augusta has shaped its commercial and cultural vocation since the Middle Ages.

Strolling through Glorenza is a journey into history: Porta Tubre, the Town Square, the Arcade Street, the historic mill, and the Church of San Pancrazio tell stories of centuries of trade and resilience. In the Church Tower you’ll find the Paul Flora Museum, dedicated to the artist born here. The city walls, strengthened by the Habsburgs after late‑medieval destruction, are the distinctive feature that makes Glorenza’s skyline unique and explains its charm for travelers, photographers, and lovers of slow travel.

Glorenza is also an excellent base for exploring the Val Venosta: among apple orchards, family‑friendly trails and panoramic routes on nearby Monte Watles, and cultural treasures such as the Abbey of Monte Maria and Churburg Castle.
