Discovering Hintere Scharte

Situated at 2,723 meters above sea level, Hintere Scharte, Forcola di Grian in Italian, is one of the most captivating mountain passes in the Rhaetian Alps, located between Switzerland’s wild Rojental and Italy’s upper Val Venosta. Surrounded by untouched landscapes, this destination is ideal for those seeking authentic hiking experiences in the Dolomites, far from conventional tourist routes.

The trails leading to Forcola di Grian traverse high-altitude terrain, rocky ridges, and alpine meadows, offering breathtaking views of the Rims Plateau, Piz S-chalambert Dadaint, and the peaks of the Sesvenna Group. Favored by experienced hikers, it’s a key stop on cross-border trekking routes between Italy and Switzerland—perfect for adventurers and contemplative travellers alike.

The surrounding area is rich in alpine culture: historic villages such as Resia, Ramosch, and Tschlin preserve Romansh-Tyrolean traditions, rural architecture, and an authentic mountain cuisine. Local dishes like Engadine barley soup and South Tyrolean apple strudel reflect the cultural fusion of the two valleys.

Thanks to its remote location and thriving biodiversity, Forcola di Grian is an ideal destination for slow and sustainable tourism in the Dolomites. The silence of the mountains, the pure air, and the richness of the natural landscape invite travellers to rediscover a mindful and restorative way of exploring.
