Discovering Grubenjoch

Located at an altitude of 2,645 meters, the Giogo delle Fosse (Grubenjoch) is a mountain pass that connects Italy’s Upper Val Venosta with Switzerland’s Lower Engadine, offering authentic hiking experiences in the heart of the Rhaetian Dolomites. Immersed in a wild and scarcely inhabited landscape, it’s an ideal destination for high-altitude trekking, slow travel, and mindful mountain exploration.

The trails crossing Giogo delle Fosse wind through rugged alpine terrain, rocky ridges, and high pastures, with panoramic views of Piz Lad, Piz Russenna, and the valleys that converge toward the Dreiländereck, the meeting point of Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. This mountain saddle is part of scenic cross-border hiking routes linking Trentino-Alto Adige with the Grisons.

The surrounding area is rich in alpine cultural heritage. Villages such as Resia, Rojen, Tschlin, and Martina preserve Romansh-Tyrolean traditions, rural architecture, and a cuisine that reflects the region’s history. Local dishes like Engadine barley soup and South Tyrolean apple strudel enhance the authenticity of the experience.
