Located at 2,143 meters above sea level in the heart of the Belluno Dolomites, Lago Coldai is one of the most enchanting and photographed mountain lakes in the entire Dolomite region. Of glacial origin, this alpine lake mesmerizes visitors with its crystal-clear emerald waters and its spectacular setting—nestled between the towering rock faces of Monte Civetta and the Coldai peaks.
A favorite destination for hikers, Lago Coldai is easily reachable from Alleghe via the cable cars to Col dei Baldi, or from Palafavera in Val di Zoldo along CAI trail 556. The route, suitable even for families and inexperienced walkers, winds through alpine pastures, panoramic mountain huts, and centuries-old forests, offering breathtaking views of Marmolada and Monte Pelmo.
Just a few minutes from the lake is the Rifugio Sonino al Coldai, a popular rest stop and ideal base for more demanding hikes such as the Alta Via N. 1 or the ascent to Rifugio Tissi, which offers spectacular views of Civetta’s awe-inspiring north wall, famously known as the “wall of walls.”
Perfect for hikers, photographers, and mountain lovers, Lago Coldai is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the Dolomites at their most authentic—where postcard-perfect landscapes meet alpine tradition.
