Discovering Centro Cadore lake
The Lago di Centro Cadore is an artificial reservoir at 683 m along the upper course of the Piave, created in the 1950s with the dam of Pieve di Cadore (locality Sottocastello). Narrow and elongated in shape, it stretches between Calalzo di Cadore, Domegge di Cadore, Pieve di Cadore and Lozzo di Cadore, offering open views of the Marmarole and Dolomite landscapes of great charm.
Its shores alternate between rocky and grassy stretches, ideal for hiking, cycling and water sports such as canoeing and SUP. Easy walks and more demanding treks connect the lake to mountain huts, while fishing and birdwatching provide moments of peace. From the lake you can reach, with a short walk, the Lago delle Tose and the waterfalls of Lagole, surrounded by woods and waters of high natural value.
In the center lies a small island where archaeological finds were discovered, today preserved in the Museum of Pieve di Cadore. Tradition links the island to an ancient Paleo-Venetian settlement and the area of Lagole to a place of worship, testimony to the historical continuity of Cadore. The reservoir was built in the post-war period as part of the hydroelectric system of the upper Piave.
The Lago di Centro Cadore is perfect for slow holidays between nature, sport and culture: authentic villages, panoramic cycling routes and the birthplace of Titian Vecellio in Pieve di Cadore complete an experience that blends landscape and identity.
