Discovering Sappada

Sappada, also known by its Germanic name Plodn, is a unique mountain village located between 1,200 and 1,300 meters above sea level in the Eastern Dolomites. Nestled in a valley crossed by the Piave River, which originates at the foot of Mount Peralba, Sappada is a German-speaking linguistic enclave that preserves its cultural and architectural heritage.

The village is divided into 15 historic hamlets, such as Cima Sappada, Cretta, and Mühlbach, featuring traditional wooden houses, carved fountains, and alpine barns. One of the most cherished events is the Sappada Carnival, with wooden masks and parades that depict rural life from the past.

Notable attractions include the Giuseppe Fontana Ethnographic Museum, the Churches of Saint Margaret and Saint Oswald, and hiking trails leading to Rifugio Calvi, Ziegelhütte Lake, and the Mühlbach Waterfalls, ideal for families and trekking enthusiasts.

In winter, Sappada becomes a renowned ski resort, offering alpine skiing, cross-country trails, snowparks, and routes for snowshoeing and ski touring. Its location at the crossroads of Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Austria makes it a melting pot of cultures and flavors, with cuisine ranging from canederli to Carnic specialties.

Perfect for a slow-paced holiday immersed in nature, sport, and tradition, Sappada is one of the most authentic destinations in the Dolomites.
